The city has a population of 118,032 as of the 2010 census. Allentown is the largest of three principal cities that comprise the Lehigh Valley, which had a population of 821,623 residents as of 2010. The other two cities are Bethlehem and Easton, both located within Lehigh County. Allentown is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) north-northwest of Philadelphia and approximately 100 miles (160 km) west-southwest of New York City. Allentown was founded in 1762 by William Allen, a wealthy merchant and colonial official from Philadelphia. Allentown was originally part of Bucks County but became part of Northampton County in 1752.
The city became the county seat of Lehigh County when it was formed in 1812. Allentown experienced significant growth during the Industrial Revolution and became a major manufacturing center due to its proximity to coal mines and iron foundries.
